This statue is a replica of the Wouwse Boer that was unveiled on 10 June 1995 in the Pastoor Pottersstraat. The original is a bronze statue of 120 cm. high, that was designed by Leon Vermunt after an idea by Karel Schrooyen.
The statue represents the prosperity of the Wouw farmers. Due to the fertile soils, especially in the vicinity of the Wouw streams, the farmers in Wouw had a larger yield on their land than the sand farmers elsewhere in the region. This was clearly reflected in their appearance, which usually had a round belly and a healthy, rosy face. They radiated prosperity with their entire figure. A saying from the 19th century underlines this once again:
"The farmers of Wouw cook their porridge so thick that the spoon's neck breaks in it."
That is one of the reasons why the residents of Wouw are also called Wouwse Papboeren. A name to be proud of. That is why the Wouwse boer is the perfect gift to let the recipient know that you wish him all the best, health and happiness.
