(Herbert Sidney Palmer was born in 1881 in Toronto (b. 1881 - d.1970). Palmer studied under renowned Canadian artists and art teachers John William Beatty and Frederick S. Challener at the Ontario College of Arts. Palmer had his first exhibition in 1905 with the Ontario Society of Artists, to which he was elected as a member in 1909. He was also a founding member of the Toronto Arts and Letters Club and was elected as a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts in 1915. Palmer was active in all three arts societies, and was the OSA secretary for 40 years. From 1926 to 1941, the artist was the curator of the Canadian National Exhibition fine arts department, choosing works to display at this premier art exhibition.)
