Paraiba Opal is a very rare gemstone that was discovered in 2012 in Brazil's Paraíba state. The total production of raw crystals was less than 30 kilograms, and no additional crystals have been found since its discovery. As a result, Brazillian Paraiba Opal is not available on the open market. Paraiba opal is also one of the few gemstones that are not treated. Paraiba Opal from Brazil's famed Paraiba state are exceedingly rare, and are visually similar to Paraiba Tourmaline, another one of the world's most valuble gemstones. Named for it's origin, Paraiba Opal displays delicate blues with a splash of green similar to the Caribbean Sea, and is very similar in color to fine Paraiba Tourmalines, one of the world's most valuble gems. Color intensity, translucency, and abscence of imperfections detetmine their value. Brazil and its neighboring country Peru are also typically the only places this increasingly rare stone is found. Note that "Ethiopian Paraiba" or others are often dyed or treated, and do not naturally share the same Paraiba hue, or value.
