A move to Paris in 1937 paved the way for Balenciaga to step into the international spotlight, as the master tailor and visionary designer debuted a slew of now-iconic sculptural silhouettes from cocoon coats to tunic dresses, before retiring in 1968 and effectively closing the house's doors for decades. Along with Nicolas Ghesquière, who served an award-winning stint at the label's helm from 1997 until 2012, current creative director and Vetements cofounder Demna Gvasalia is widely credited with reviving the house to its former glory.
