Hi. Is this actually gold fill? Or gold plated? I was told by a jeweler that gold fill is actually a composite of gold and other metals, that it’s not a coating. TIA.

So I just used Grok app to ask the question and it did say that gold fill is just a thicker layer of gold on top of a base metal which is not what a jeweler told me. I’ve been confused this entire time. Thank you.

@hilltoppergal hi there! I have a description of what gold fill is in my photos. There is a difference between plated and filled. Gold filled lasts a lifetime like literally hundreds of years a lot of antique jewelry you will find is gold filled. Gold plated has about a year or less depending on how one takes care of the piece before the plating wears off. Very big difference. But your jeweler didn’t explain the difference well enough. I’d recommend you research online!

@hilltoppergal yes absolutely gold fill is like the next best thing to solid gold! Some would argue gold vermeil is better but gold vermeil looks extremely fake to me while gold filled looks more like solid gold
