The lock is purely for decor purposes, it does not function as a lock. The keychain can be used as one or split into two separate pieces by pressing the side button and releasing the key that fits inside the lock. This valet style is really useful for attaching the house key to one end and the car keys on the other, then taking out the other end when you don't want to turn off the car to lock or unlock the front door!
