The Mel Gambert made-to-measure shirt company began over 45 years ago when Joseph J. Gambert, a custom shirt maker in Newark, New Jersey since 1933, purchased the Martin Freedman Company. The year was 1958. The company had a client base of 150 dealers across the country. These were all retail shops selling made-to-measure shirts. Orders were taken by choosing a collar and cuff style. Size was determined by neck size, sleeve length and body type.
