These so-called weather glasses were used in earlier times to measure air pressure. The name "Goethe Barometer" stems from the long-held belief that Privy Councillor Goethe himself had invented this instrument. No one can say for sure how old the oldest weather glasses really are. It is believed that the Moors, who came to Spain in 711, already carried such weather glasses with them. The Dutch sailors were also familiar with these weather glasses. They are said to have brought this ingenious instrument to America as early as 1620. The Goethe barometer is relatively reliable. While it can't be used for precise scientific measurements, it provides a fairly clear indication of the weather. Moreover, the barometer makes a very original and attractive wall decoration. At normal atmospheric pressure, fill the spout with water (distilled or boiled). Fill only enough to cover the opening between the spout and the piston. The water can be colored as desired using dye tablets (Easter egg dye). Hang the Goethe barometer in a suitable location using the glass eyelet. The water will now be affected by atmospheric pressure. In high pressure, i.e., during fair weather, the water level in the spout drops and rises in the reservoir.
