Antique circa 1790s-1890 Spode Copeland set of 6 white china demitasse gold and royal blue floral cups and saucers accompanied by a creamer with the same number on the back of each. One saucer of the set gives some specific detail of James Green & Nephew (at top of brown stamp) with Queen Victoria S (either Street, not sure) London. This is a beautiful set. It is an antique in really great shape. There is a slight indication of age on the bottom of one that has a very slight off-white colour. I will try to sell this set altogether as it has the same artistic manufacture number as well of 3500 on demitasse cups, saucers and creamer but may sell all individually if it does not sell as a unit.
If familiar with the reputable name Spode china, it is not common to run across their pottery, so exciting to see this history. Spode began producing pottery in the late 1700s in stoke-on-Trent, England. In 1800, they introduced their version of bone china, which became the standard for English bone china. After 1847 the company operated as W.T. Copeland and Sons, but continued to use the Spode name. Demitasse cups are small cups about half the size of a standard coffee cup, typically holding 60-90 ml. They were originally used in France to serve strong coffee after meals, following the coffee drinking traditions of the Ottoman Empire.
