Rebecca at the well, Antique Mourning Cameo Broach/Pendant. Circa mid-to-late 19th century (1800s)
Mourning jewellery of this kind is a rare find. The details are exquisite.
Created to honour the memory of a loved one of the finest families, often gf and a lock of hair or braid would be encased in the back.
Cameo swivels when pin is open. The back of the locket has space to include hair. It looks to have had hair or something in it at some time as it is dirty; perhaps still holds some remanence.
The cameo is of a maiden (Rebecca) standing beside a well drying her hands. A tree shades over her, and a house, trees, and rolling hills are seen off in the distance. And until I photographed this I couldn't see the butterfly sitting on the edge of the well.
A grape vine & leaf intricately craftedv winds around the stems that create the frame of the cameo from the bottom to the top. The vine is broken and the leaf at the top is loose, the pieces are holding on as they intertwine around the stems.
This is a very unique and beautiful piece for any cameo or mourning collection.
Mourning jewellery like this comes around rarely. In my research I found one other like it. Most of the pricing of these brooches is usd, I am meeting it in Cad. Negotiable.
