Barbara Bolan Vintage 80s 90s Red Silk Purse

Barbara Bolan created bags in the '80's and early '90's that were varied in style and design but it is her structural bags that I personally favor. These bags emphasized the shape as the defining characteristic of the purse. There are a few of her sculptural bags in the Metropolitan Museum's web site. This purse is oblong shape with a flat bottom so that it can stand on its own. It is soft cased and covered with a silk satin fabric. The bag closes with a snap closure. There is a braided red silk cord which can be tucked inside. It is used when the wearer wants the bag to be a shoulder or cross body bag. The drop is 23" to the top of the bag. The inside is lined with what I describe as a soft leather. Not sure if it’s real leather or vegan, but I’m guessing because it’s a Barbara Bolan, it’s probably real leather. The inside is very clean with a zipper pocket and red slip pocket. The measurements of the bag are 5 1/2”high x 9” length x 2 1/2”width. The bag is in overall great vintage shape with minor indications of wear (faint dark marks on side and near bottom) or age as shown in photos. In its own simple manner, this bag stands out.
