One direction sets the day, and the other direction sets the date. Pull to second click to set the time. When you receive it, you may have to shake it gently back and forth to make it run. It is self winding, so it will wind with the movement of your wrist. Hope you enjoy it. It should bring you many years of good service. Thank you
