figmarigoldchic Andrea - Love your closet. I was reading your jewelry write up on vintage petite cuff. My aunt passed recently and left me a a collection of fashion jewelry and some real from her travels around the world. Issue is I don’t know how to tell real vs. face gems/stones or how to identify them. I am trying to sell half of it - keeping sentimental items. Do you have advice on what devices to use and where to get them?Also need to ID sterling silver vs plated. Advice appreciated! Best, Barb

joyfullythriftd @barbbrown2 Thanks so much! Im so sorry for your loss. In regards to checking for sterling silver vs plated. You will need a sterling silver acid testing kit. You may want to watch some videos on youtube about the best way to test items, some content creators that have good videos on this are "The funky pickle thrifter and texas gal treasures" you will need a jewelers loupe to look at the area you scratched when testing to look for another metal underneath and to check for hallmarks like 925.

joyfullythriftd @barbbrown2 Cont... I recommend the JSP brand of testing acid. There are alot of sterling marked 925 that is only plated so you will want to test them all if selling, or state you are uncertain. Depending on how many items you have it may be easier to take to a trusted jeweler to check them? In regard to testing gemstones, I use a Presidium Gem Tester II this can be found on Amazon along with the Acid. The gemstone tester does identify the main groups of gemstones. The two creators I

This machine can be expensive (269$ currently) so it may be more cost effective to take those more valuable items and have your jeweler check them for stones. All the tools I listed can be found on Amazon. The sterling silver acid and jewelers loupe are fairly inexpensive so I would start there. Since pm does not really allow sharing photos within comments, the easiest way would be to photograph and do a mock listing but keep it marked as not for sale. I’ve done this before and just set the title as “For visual purposes only- not currently for sale” or something like that.

joyfullythriftd @b2bethsbling I test all items suspected of Bakelite with semi chrome to check for a reaction. As far as amber you want to get a UV flashlight as the first way to examine the piece for a fluorescent “blue” type reaction. They are very easy to find on Amazon. There are ways to make other materials glow so the light cannot always be definitive but helps to start out. Once you have the photos up let me know and I can take a look!!!

I’m happy to look for you tomorrow and reach back out to let you know !! I know I at least have one (Dainty turquoise style) that’s a 2.25 in my pile to photograph tomorrow but I likely have more even smaller, especially in band styles or dainty Southwest style turquoise rings❤️

joyfullythriftd @tcat3 Hi! So I went through some super small rings I have today to see what I have that small and there are several size 2 a 2.5. I took photos today and they should be up within a the next week. I’ll try to prioritize those first for you. Some are adjustable with a break in the back of band (like a toe/midi ring style) several others solid bands like normal rings. Will work on these hopefully you can check them out. ❤️❤️
