chrisdieugenio Hi there, I was packing up the Seiko you just bought from me and it’s in gorgeous shape, looks unworn, but I noted that the battery has ceased. Would you still like me to ship it to you? It worked perfectly prior to the battery stopping, so it’ll just need that swapped out. Let me know what you’d like me to do. I think at the sales price, even with a battery change, you’re still making out pretty well. Chris

awi2357 @chrisdieugenio Thanks for letting me know. I am glad to change the battery as I have the tools and batteries around to do it. I am happy for you to go ahead and ship it to me. Thanks again! Be well!

chrisdieugenio @awi2357 perfect - thanks for understanding. It’s a fantastic piece. Chris

chrisdieugenio @awi2357 thanks for the kind review! Glad you got the watch. Btw, I just listed a really nice and barely worn (2x maybe) Seiko field watch that is sold out everywhere. I’m just trying to lighten my load of watches right now. If interested, just letting you know!

awi2357 @chrisdieugenio Thank you. I expected it to be good, but I wasn't expecting to be quite so impressed. Especially at the great price you offered. I sold a green Seiko SNK back in June...just didn't wear it much due to the color. I have to admit the blue is tempting! I am surprised you haven't sold it yet. Seiko 5's have been hot sellers for me and as you said they are getting harder to find in stock now. Thanks again!

chrisdieugenio @awi2357 make an offer for what you think is fair and I’ll sell to you
Aug 20Reply
chrisdieugenio
chrisdieugenio @awi2357 I’ve tried to like the little blue dial but just don’t wear it enough. I’m partial to my Hamilton Khaki King and the size on the Seiko 5 just seems unnatural to me now.

ericprime @awi2357 hey Andrew the wenger watch I bought just started acting funny today. the second hand has stopped. I adjusted the time and it started again but stopped an hour later. Do you have any suggestions?
Sep 03Reply
awi2357
awi2357 @ericprime I'm sorry to hear that. Sometimes quartz watches can be affected by humidity levels. If you think it could be climate related you could try placing the watch in a bag with some rice, damp rid, or silica gel to see if that helps. Also the oil used to lubricate the movement from the factory can dry out over time. Sometimes gentle heat can help the oil redistribute. A heating pad or warm window sill can help sometimes. If all of that fails I would try a new battery.

awi2357
awi2357 @ericprime If all of that fails I would try a new battery. I replaced the battery myself but sometimes even new batteries can be bad or fail quickly. After that the options would be to service or replace the movement.

awi2357
awi2357 @ericprime If the seconds hand is stopping on one of the other hands I would suspect an impact or other factor has caused the hands to become misaligned allowing them to touch each other. Or if it stops in the same place on the dial each time perhaps the seconds hand could be hitting the dial or crystal. A watchmaker or jeweler could check this for you if you aren't comfortable opening the case yourself.

ericprime
ericprime @awi2357 the second hand seems to be stopping at random places. I took the back off and see it needs a different type of battery than I have. so I'll place this in the window sill while I wait for a new battery to arrive. hopefully one of those things will fix it.

ericprime my thought was it might be the battery too. thanks for the advice.

awi2357
awi2357 @chrisdieugenio No worries. I appreciate the update. I will let you know when it arrives. Out of curiosity, what new piece are you working toward funding? Thanks again. Take care!
Sep 14Reply
chrisdieugenio
chrisdieugenio @awi2357 I’m working toward funding a Hamilton Boulton mechanical. My grandfather wore a watch with a similar look. It was a Hamilton but I don’t know the exact model because of how worn it is, but it actually still works. My dad had it in his keepsake drawer and didn’t realize it was a mechanical watch so he figured it just stopped working. It’s wild. So I have thet working Art Deco Hamilton from the 50’s and I want to buy a new one to actually wear and sit next to it in the box.

awi2357
awi2357 @chrisdieugenio That is awesome! The Boulton is a cool piece. Thanks for sharing. I inherited a 1962 Hamilton Sea Rover II that was my grandfather's watch. When my dad died two years ago it passed to me. It is in for service right now. Lots of love and respect for vintage (and modern) Hamilton watches. Good luck with the purchase. And thanks for the great transactions so far.

chrisdieugenio
chrisdieugenio @awi2357 of course - anytime. I don’t know if you’re interested but I have a Seiko Prospex navy blue dial and bezel, and a Bulova Moon watch I’d be willing to part with. I also have the other iron Annie pilot’s watch up for sale.

chrisdieugenio
chrisdieugenio @awi2357 Hamilton watches are great. I honestly haven’t bought much above their price point but from what have seen so far, they seem to be really great for the price and I don’t think there’s much around that $500-1,000 price point that competes with them. Maybe some seiko Alpinist or some orient star watches?
Sep 14Reply
awi2357
awi2357 @chrisdieugenio Thanks! I should probably slow down a bit on the purchases for a while. 😂 But I will let you know. I was always into the Junkers/Iron Annie pilots watches and have also been in the market for a Zeppelin Automatic. I am a bit of a Germanophile, so the German Made factor appeals to me. Really enjoying the fully lumed Iron Annie so far. The Miyota movement is running super accurately as well.

chrisdieugenio
chrisdieugenio @awi2357 I like their look but I was taken aback by the noisy movement. Maybe I’m just not used to it? The Two Broke Watch Snobs refer to it on their podcast as a pepper mill effect. Lol it doesn’t affect operation or anything it’s just a nitpick. Probably because owning some quartz and Hamilton autos, it becomes apparent whereas most wouldn’t notice it.
Sep 14Reply
awi2357
awi2357 @chrisdieugenio Yeah, the Orient Stars are real sleeper watches. They punch well above their weight. Some Tissot and Certina watches are pretty nice for the money, but Hamilton definitely stands out in the entry to mid level swiss watch market.
Sep 14Reply
chrisdieugenio
chrisdieugenio @awi2357 I keep hearing good things about Certina. What about tissot. What model would you say is a great one for around $500?
Sep 14Reply
awi2357
awi2357 @chrisdieugenio Yeah, the Miyota rotor definitely has a unique sound. Because they only wind in one direction, the rotor spins freely in the other direction which gives that slight rattle/grind noise. I have a few vintage automatic pieces that have louder rotors, so it doesn't bother me. I can see where it would be off-putting to some though. Like I said, I can't argue with the accuracy. It's running close to COSC spec, so I am very pleased. I love the 24 hour subdial complication as well.

chrisdieugenio
chrisdieugenio @awi2357 I’m glad you appreciate it. I definitely took a loss on it. I never sell for profit on these things lol
Sep 14Reply
awi2357
awi2357 @chrisdieugenio I have a Tissot Visodate Heritage Automatic that I love. The finishing is really sharp and clean for the money. It has an ETA 2836-2. Most of them now have the Powermatic 80 which I don't like quite as much. It's personal preference. I have the black dial and it is a real strap monster. I like the Tissot Le Locle as well. I have a Certina DS-1 grey dial on order. We will see how that compares.
