deadlyhandsome @lotsaknots as long as the box is bigger than the hat and there is padding around it to keep it from moving it should be fine. Crumpled newspaper or anything will work as long as it holds the hat in place. The biggest issues I’ve had is the boxes being too small and crushing the hats.

I’m sure that you already know this, but I makes me feel better to say it: felt hats are fragile things and if they are not packaged right they will get damaged in shipping. The box must be large enough to not cause the hat to distort and the packaging inside the box must provide support (crumpled paper works fine). Thanks!

worth_estate Hi Brent, Thank you for your interest in the Borsaloni...I'd like to add to the description...it's vintage, clean, soft. Although not showroom crisp, the slight indentations from time are shown in the photos. It ships with a protective cardboard ring around the crown and gentle packing material around the brim. I use a large box to ship hats.

deadlyhandsome @petratshops I like the style of the hat a lot, but this hat was made after Byer-Rolnick sold Resistol in 1967-68. The quality of these 1970s hats just isn’t the same and not usually what I’m looking for a a collector. I’d have to get the hat at a real bargain to be interested. I’m sure someone else will love it. I am a frequent contributor at The Fedora Lounge (biggest repository of hat information on the internet). I know my hats. No one knows it all, but I know a lot about hats.

deadlyhandsome @toytreasureshop The homburg came into existence after the turn of the century (1900). Prince Edward made them popular. Those early Homburgs had tapered crowns and a distinct Teutonic look. The homburg evolved into a lower more square crown hat after WW1. Your homburg is of a modern shape.

deadlyhandsome @toytreasureshop I don’t know any hat that has ever had it’s date of manufacture on either the liner or the crown. A few have the date stamped on the backside of the sweatband. Until circa 1960, every Mallory had either 1823 or 1819 on their liners, but that had nothing to do with the date of manufacture.

deadlyhandsome @toytreasureshop Your hat also appears to have a plastic liner protector. These first appeared in the 1950s. In the late 1930s or early 1940s we see the first liner protectors appear, but they are a hazy oilskin type of material that gave way to plastic in the 1950s. Your hat also has a reeded sweatband that would not have been used on a hat made in the 1800s.

The brims have to be a minimum of 2 1/2 inches wide. Mostly, I’m interested in the larger sizes: 7 5/8 and 7 3/4. I never by hats below size 7 1/8. Let me know what you have that fits my parameters. I’m only interested in sizes 7 1/4 (58cm) or larger and I only buy fur felt hats and not wool. Your hats with the cane on the liner are from Capas Headwear and I’m not interested in anything from that company. I keep a pretty close eye on the market and I’d definitely be interested if you have other hats. Brent

The hat I received isn’t ever going to be something I can wear and I’m left trying to sell it to someone else to cover my costs. I’m not mad. My feedback wasn’t personal, but it was accurate. deadlyhandsome @johnsmyfav Fair enough. It’s very hard to measure a hat accurately. US hat sizes are the inside circumference divided by pi (3.14) and if you are off on your measurements even a small amount you will get the size wrong. The inside circumference, measured along the inside of the sweatband, is a hard measurement to take accurately. The length and width of the head opening can provide an approximation of the size, but it’s not exact, and again the measurements need to be precise. Good luck

deadlyhandsome @johnsmyfav Be aware, very few dress hats/fedoras were made of beaver. Most of the hats that say “Beaver” on them were/are mostly rabbit and hare fur with a varying (usually very small) amount of beaver in the blend. Unless you are talking about very old (80+years) or European hats make before 1960, wool hats are not desirable and aren’t likely to sell for much; the same for wool and fur blend hats. Good luck.

johnsmyfav I will keep that in mind. Most of my son's better hats are still in his rotation and won't be sold any time soon. I would classify some as novelties such as pith helmets and deerstalkers but they are serious hats. And antiques that are retired because they are frail now and in no condition to be worn, like silk collapsible top hats and fragile straw boaters, all gorgeous and on display in my home. Those will take time to price and market directly to hat people if I ever decide to sell them.

deadlyhandsome @lathriftjunkie Its three sizes too small for me. It’s not of any use. Imagine shoes that are three sizes too small. No matter the price or the quality, it you can’t wear it then it is of no use or value. The size tag clearly shows 7 1/4.

deadlyhandsome @lindsayyanco I’m not trolling anyone. I’m a serious hat buyer and I buy a lot of hats. I also do a lot of research and know a lot about hats. I went through my favorites and made fair market value offers on hats last night. I have since removed yours hat from my favorites list so this should not happen again. I will say that this is not a whippet and is almost certainly not a size 7 1/2 based on the brim to crown ratio and it’s grossly overpriced. I apologize if I have somehow upset you.

deadlyhandsome @falco2 If it’s the one you currently have listed, it’s a great hat. It’s a “Excellent” quality and it has the exposition medals. From the first 25 years or so of the 20th century. There looks to be a little verdigris from the ferrule at the sweatband seam, but nothing too bad. A little white/distilled vinegar can help to stop the reaction. The leather sweatband looks to be in good condition, but it’s hard to tell in photos. A major concern of hats of this vintage is the cotton thread rotting.

deadlyhandsome @falco2 If you can gently, without causing damage or thread popping, look for the factory label glued to the felt behind the sweatband that would be useful. You have it priced right as long as it’s a size 7 ⅛ or larger. If it’s size 7 ⅜ or larger you might raise the price a bit.

deadlyhandsome @falco2 It was definitely made in Philadelphia. 7 ¼ is a great size too. Unless there are issues I’m not seeing, It might be priced a bit low, but Derbies/bowlers don’t bring the prices that fedoras do. If it were me, I would have started it around $200. Good luck, and great hat.
