Hi! I'm Christi Thi. I’m a disabled, USAF Veteran & daughter, grand & great-grand dtr of veterans of the 🇺🇸 & both 🇻🇳 militaries. christizelaya @joeg0524 And then some! 🤣 I couldn’t have children so I have these two. I just lost my first two kids during the pandemic. The first passed in 8/2020 and the second in 10/2020. These two were born in 12/2020 but I didn’t bring them home until the were 10 weeks old. And my home was already prepared for the coming YEAR of their lives. Toys, pens, beds, blankets, feeding and water bowls, you name it. Yeah, they’re spoiled.

christizelaya @beautifynails if only I could get my nails to grow out! I’ve had troubles with my fingernails peeling and being thin all my life. I’m lucky to get them to grow just barely to my fingertips, and even then, it’s not for long before they start peeling again. Never long enough to enjoy.

And I was the one who introduced her to fresh fruits - teensy pieces of mango when she was just about five months old. Oh my how she loved that! They’re still her favorite fruit today. lol

Although most wouldn’t guess it given that my boy - the liver-blue - is twice the size (literally) of his sister - the liver and white.

christizelaya @bubbleandsqueak Teddy weighs 14lbs whereas Lily weighs a whopping 7lbs on a pre-grooming day. Their mama and papa were cream and white (mama) and blue (papa). But mama’s parents were cream and white and a liver, while papa’s were one blue and one half blue, half liver and blue. One Teddy’s back now, you can see the blue starting to grow in some. It’s pretty!

bubbleandsqueak @christizelaya oh they are adorable, some of the cutest and most unique coloring i have seen on a shitzu, we have one, his pics are on my about page named duffy and he just turned 14 last week and still acts like a puppy. I have asthma so that was why we were turned onto the breed but found out they are truly amazing dogs.

My first was a toy poodle - named, of all things, DUFFY! 😂 I had a shih tzu - Tibetan spaniel mix last time and that’s when my love affair for this precious breed began. Tibetan spaniels are harder to come by - pure breds anyway. But I started learning as much as I could about these little ones and the more I learned, the more I fell in love. Now, I know there is no other breed I will ever have.

christizelaya @bubbleandsqueak My Wilbur - the black and white also pictured above - was somewhere between 18 and 20 when we had to let him go. He was a rescue, so they weren’t quite sure of his exact age. But he was lively and playful as can be until he started getting sick. And even then, his spirit never changed. I just saw it in his eyes when he was ready.

And when we let her go, it bout killed him. With these two, Teddy is clearly a daddy’s boy and he loves that, but I know he still wants a big dog, too.

Yeah apparently duffy is an imperial shitzu, we didnt really know what that was, we just fell in love with him but they seem to be bread smaller for sure, it’s so funny his back legs are higher than the front, we always say he is suped up like a hot rod:)

bubbleandsqueak @christizelaya he tells us where they are to get them and never forgets, he has a red ball we can never lose he gets all upset if you throw that one. He hides treats in his bed and plays games with himself and jumps all around his bed and then rewards himself with a treat, its so funny, he will hide our socks and all sorts of other things we find in his bed its so funny.

Be careful - they can be prone to more of the health issues. 🙁 There are only two types of shih tzu - English and American. Would you believe these precious little things almost went extinct?!?

christizelaya @bubbleandsqueak Every shih tzu in the world today descended from one of seven pair that were saved from extinction by either a queen or princess in China if I recall correctly. During one of their wars waaaay back, they were ordered to be executed into extinction. Seven pair were smuggled into England.

christizelaya @bubbleandsqueak The shih tzu we’re bred strictly for the royalty of China, eventually under the strict supervision of the dowager princess Cixi, as foot warmers. ☺️ However the actual breeding was performed by eunuchs who competed to produce the best quality. They’re very quick learners and very astute in reading people. There are some websites that give partial histories of their ancestry and origins, but I’ve found much more thorough books.

There is a legend of the shih tzu and the Buddha that you should read. It’s cute and talks about the typical “white star” on their foreheads like Lily’s. You’ll get a kick out of it.

christizelaya @bubbleandsqueak My kids both have their favorite toys, and even carry them to bed with them at night. I just say “okay, it’s bed time. Go get your babies.” And they pick up their babies and off they go, babies in their mouths, down the hall to our room. SO CUTE!

Lily is more prone to take her goodie in her mouth and sit there with it for a minute - still in her mouth… then suddenly she flips over on her back and plays with it on her back before she decides to eat it - ON HER BACK. She’s my little cuckoo bird.

christizelaya @bubbleandsqueak They both love to play with their toys while on their backs, holding them with their pays and playing by themselves. And they each have “their” toys, and then they have toys that they will share. But my house is overrun by toys EVERYWHERE! The one saving Grace is that if I tell them to pick up their toys, they will pick them up and put them in their basket.

christizelaya @bubbleandsqueak I have a collapsible laundry basket that I’ve collapsed one side of that I use for their toy basket. That way when it’s time to vacuum, I tell them to pick up their toys, they do, then I pop up the side and pick up the basket to move it out of my way.

christizelaya @bubbleandsqueak I’ve had them since they were 10 weeks, so they’re very well trained and know SO many commands and tricks. ☺️ I trained them myself and they learned most of it before they were six months old. They’re smart kids.

bubbleandsqueak @christizelaya what oh my gosh thatbis crazy they are so smart, that is so cute about the laundry basket, they really are so smart, my husband was worried about that because boarder collies are so smart that shitzus wouldn’t be but he was so surprised, he said duffy is just as smart as bob was, i was counting i think he knows over 200 words and he seems like more of a person than a dog.

christizelaya @bubbleandsqueak yeah, I actually have to spell more things out than I ever thought I would have to because these two are sneaky little things. Sometimes they’re a bit too intuitive too. But… there’s a few downfalls too. Teddy does NOT like car rides. He gets nervous and ends up getting sick to his tummy. Even with prescription anti nausea medication.

christizelaya @bubbleandsqueak And Lily gets anxious and gets really quiet. And she does NOT like being away from me. I’m home all the time, so unfortunately she has developed separation anxiety. She hasn’t developed any bad acting out habits thankfully. But it stresses her out badly, to the point that she’s exhausted once I’m home and she’s done her happy, excited dance. It’s like that full adrenalin high for about five minutes then a sudden crash.

christizelaya I end up having to hold her for the rest of the day and most of the next. I rock her to sleep. And she sleeps curled up next to me anyway, but she snuggles practically under me at those times, and my arm has to be around her.

christizelaya @bubbleandsqueak My vet attributes a lot of their intelligence and their abilities - aside from my constant and consistent teaching - to their diet too. They’re on a very “high maintenance “ diet. Raw food in the morning with a probiotic, allergy and skin health supplement. Then raw, freeze-dried kibble to graze throughout the day.

christizelaya @bubbleandsqueak Even their snacks are dehydrated fruits, veggies and jerkies. Or homemade treats. And their dental regimen is thorough also. I’m determined to make them part of the 20% that has healthy teeth their whole lives - or as close to it as possible.

bubbleandsqueak @christizelaya thats amazing, Yeah Duffy eats fruits and vegetables and all natural food, he has had bad teeth and eyes from the start even as a puppy and had a lot of his teeth pulled and is on 3 eyedrops and thyroid meds. He doesn’t let it get him down though.

But it never stopped him. These two - the love everything! Carrots, broccoli stems, cauliflower stems, lettuce, melons, berries, apples, pineapple, cucumber… it’s so cute!!

They loved when I made frozen yogurt “paws” for them last summer and early this summer. I have all kinds of silicone chocolate molds, so I took some yogurt (I make it at home).

bubbleandsqueak @christizelaya yeah, we didn't know what an "imperial" shitzu was at the time, we just fell in love with duffy, but we figured that out later and he does have teeth and eye problems but besides that he is amazing. He used to throw up a lot but we found out if we didn't feed him bread or potato products he stopped throwing up.

He has developed severe anxiety as he has gotten older as well, we have loud upstairs neighbors and just the noise he will start shaking and trying to hide behind the toilet or jump in the bathtub or try to climb up us, I feel so badly for him, we have done all the behavioral things, thunder vests, medications, so he has been staying with my parents frequently right now till we figure it out but we miss him

Yes jasper my parents shitzu and maybe part something else is soooo zen, he will sit by the pool and watch the moon for hours almost meditating. Yeah duff gets all excited when we say let's take a nap or it's bedtime. Sometimes he just puts himself to bed if we are not going at the time he wants to.

christizelaya @bubbleandsqueak yeah. That’s something about small dogs with underbites in general unfortunately. They’re prone to losing their teeth early due to overcrowding. And smooshies like pugs, shih tzu, Pekingese, etc are susceptible to the eye issues because they’re more prominent. That’s why we have to clean their eyes so often.

christizelaya @bubbleandsqueak Teddy’s eyes secrete more of the awful brown “tears” than Lily’s do, which stinks SO bad! So I’m constantly washing his face. Every morning and night, a warm wash cloth (baby wash cloths are soooo perfect for this) and then I follow with doggie eye wipes. There’s a particular brand I like because they help keep his secretions from getting crusty and they smell good, but I can’t remember the name right now.

The nice part is that though I’ve worked with them since they were babies as far as the grooming thigg bc s - my groomer adores them because they’re so easy and cooperative with her! Teddy doesn’t like to have his face washed at home. 😂

The anxiety could be mild hearing loss too. My little Wilbur started reacting that way as his hearing started deteriorating. 🙁

She’s always been a Christian, but Buddhism is more of a way of life. More about respecting life and others, so it was easy to be a Christian and still practice the ways of the Buddhist, of that makes sense.

christizelaya @souveniring I’m thrilled you were able to buy it and what I would suggest for the scuffs is buy a really good leather CLEANER. After that make sure you treat the leather with a high quality mink oil or other leather treatment to keep it in top shape regularly (as recommended on the product as each type has different recommendations). Also make sure to treat it with a water and stain resistant product for protection. Your bag will be impervious to just about anything! 😂

They are my pride and joy and keep me on my toes for sure!
