raedance @gtronco Thanks. When I researched, I was surprised how late in life people are having the surgery. I’m 52. There is a Facebook group for people over 50 with many members who have had surgery late in life. Many are trying to put off knee replacement like me.

gtronco Can I please give some advice that you may not want. Have the knee surgery today or tomorrow. I have had two artificial knees for close to 20 years now. They are wonderful!! I had bone on bone and it really hurt to walk. I love love my knees. After surgery you really have to work with them and bend and stretch until they are almost normal. The only things I can not do is run and get down on the floor on them. BUT there is no more pain .

gtronco They made me cut down on what I had to say. The only things I can not do is run and get down on the floor on my knees. After two heart surgeries I am not worried about what I cannot do but more excited about what I can and I thank God every day for all my blessings. Please please have the knees while you are still young. There are so many more things to do and people to do them with when you are young ❤️❤️❤️❤️

stelias1 Looking great! I’ve thought of getting the weight loss surgery since I’m a 53 yr old plus 2X with Lupus but wasn’t sure of all the follow up cosmetic surgeries that go along with losing the weight so what’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?

raedance @gtronco Thanks. I have lost about 80 lbs since May and definitely feel a big difference. Not quite bone on bone yet. My ortho said the recovery will be easier with the weight loss, so I am going to at least give it another 6 months to a year. My weight will be stable and new eating habits more ingrained so I don’t “comfort” eat during my knee replacement recovery.

raedance @stelias1 The surgery itself was the easy part. Learning to eat and drink again is the hard part. I was dehydrated at first because of getting thrush (side effect of the antibiotics received in the hospital) after surgery and everything tasting awful. Even after the thrush, it was 3 months before I could sip plain water without it feeling like I swallowed a balloon.

raedance @stelias1 No carbonation allowed - ever. Most docs say it stretches your stomach. Getting enough protein and liquids is still a challenge. They recommend 60 - 90 grams a day of protein and 64 ounces. Your new small egg sized stomach may not like foods you used to eat. It’s a slow process introducing new foods and many say that your tastes/stomach preferences can continue to change. .

raedance @stelias1 Some cannot tolerate beef the first year. Some many years out say they can never eat beef or other meats. Everyone is different. They tell you not to drink with meals and for at least an hour after. This allows your stomach to absorb nutrients and brain to feel full vs liquids pushing through the food faster. Lots to learn and change

raedance @berrymeadows Hi, Congratulations! I sized out of so much I had stored in my basement for so long. It takes quite a bit of effort at first to get it posted, but it has saved a lot of money too on new clothes. I was shopping thrift most of last year. My weight has finally stabilized and am getting a tummy tuck in a few months. After that, I hope to know my true lower size that I want to maintain. Later will get the girls lifted and will buy new bras. Good luck with your journey!
