mgutierrez0628 Hi! I noticed you commented on a garmin forerunner 35! I just bought one and am looking to sell because I don’t go running and it doesn’t have the workout trackers I like but I live really far from a Walmart so not worth the return ! Are you still looking ?! I have the box it’s not even been worn for an hour thanks!!

kraty @mgutierrez0628 does it have an altimeter?

mgutierrez0628
mgutierrez0628 @kraty “The watch itself doesn't have an altimeter, but once your run syncs to your phone, you get elevation stats. It also pushes notifications from your phone depending on your settings.”

cathcatdog I'm sorry about canceling your leash order. I sold it elsewhere, and though I tried to remove the listing from Poshmark immediately, I could not b/c I had sent out an offer. Though I know now not to do that in the future, I'm very sorry I did it to you.

cathcatdog @kraty 😔 I can imagine. I’m posting more dog stuff soon. If ever there’s anything you like, plz remind me of this, and I will discount what you want. Lame, I know. But it’s the only thing I can think to do to try to make this right. Best to you.
Feb 26Reply
kraty
kraty @cathcatdog it happens , it’s ok! And thank you! I have a 6 year old dog and just got a new puppy too so was looking at the tether leash for the pup! I’ll just order one from Ruffwear :)
Feb 26Reply
cathcatdog
cathcatdog @kraty Before you do that, may I say something you might consider? (I'm a professional dog trainer.) A drawback to extendable or retractable leashes is that they can teach a dog that pulling against the leash earns them more freedom or gets them closer to what they want. This is the opposite of what we want tension on the leash to mean to our dogs--we want dogs to feel the tension, and instead of pulling against it, to give into it, or come our way.
Feb 26Reply
cathcatdog
cathcatdog That said, your instinct for wanting to protect pup from accidentally yanking his own head off is spot on. I tend to do a couple things: if you want to go forward with using an extendable, that's just fine--just keep in mind what the extension might be teaching pup, and counterbalance that influence with leash-training exercises so pup understands what to do when walking on a regular leash.
Feb 26Reply
cathcatdog
cathcatdog The other thing is to attach the leash to a harness instead of a collar. If you use a harness, then you can opt for using a long-line, which is a 15', 20' or 25' long leash. (Perhaps you know all of this, and if so, I'm sorry for blathering on.). Anyway, I will post a long-line and some harnesses. If you're interested, let me know, and I'll rock-bottom discount them for you.
Feb 26Reply
kraty
kraty @cathcatdog oh nice! So I was planning on using it more so for in the house (teaching the puppy not to chase the cat or just being able to have him close to me while in parts of the house he isn’t allowed or be free yet)... but I totally hear what you are saying and I do use a reg leash outside with him.
Feb 26Reply
kraty
kraty As far a teaching a puppy to walk on leash, what do you recommend for a collar? I’ve always used sprenger collars for my larger dogs and they work wondetjlu but not sure about a puppy? He’s a little guy (who will grow to be big and very strong tho!) I was thinking of starting with a martingale collar for him since he is so small?
Feb 26Reply
kraty
kraty @cathcatdog I’ll take a look at what you have- I was told harnesses don’t really work on teaching bc they don’t correct the dog? I do have a few cheap long lines I got off Amazon to teach recall but right now I’m more focused on getting to realky just walk and follow me. He’s all over the place lol
Feb 26Reply
cathcatdog
cathcatdog I use and recommend the use of regular collars. And I am a fan of harnesses. The reason I am a fan is that they do not "correct" the dog. Myself, I want the dog to learn to stay with me--not b/c he is compelled to, not b/c he's prevented from doing something else--but b/c he wants to, b/c he chooses to, b/c it is reinforcing for him. And taking a looksey at your profile, I'm guessing you take your doggies hiking?...
Feb 26Reply
cathcatdog
cathcatdog All the more reason, imo, to work your new dog when he's a pup--when he's young and impressionable--on making this decision himself. Because when your dogs are off-leash, you cannot control them physically--you have to have influence over their behavior. If you have a robust history of reinforcement around "all things you"--if your pup finds every interaction with you reinforcing, then staying with you or checking in with you after having checked something out in the environment--becomes auto-
Feb 26Reply
kraty
kraty @cathcatdog I like that! And fully agree!!! Thanks for your insight- I appreciate it!! My 6 year old female is amazing- she listens perfectly and stays right with me always- (never used a sprenger on her, I had for my old labs); I am just really trying to make it so our new puppy is as good as her :) I’ve heard that rewarding for everyone they look up at me is really helpful too. I def don’t want to reinforce behaviors, I want him to just want to do the right thing 💙
Feb 26Reply
cathcatdog
cathcatdog ...matic. Having a well-behaved adult dog can be a great way to teach your pup to behave well! Also, I refer my clients to online training resources...check out Emily Larlham (search by her name or dogmantics.com or kikopup). Great instructional videos online / youtube, for pups and for adults. And it's all based on the science of teaching and learning. Fun! Fun! Fun!
Feb 26Reply
kraty
kraty @cathcatdog thank you so much!! I’ve been listening to the puppy training podcast by Amy Jenson a lot too!
Feb 26Reply
cathcatdog
cathcatdog One final thing: "being all over the place" is good news! It means your pup in curious about his world, wants to investigate it, and has the confidence to do so. When you reward any behavior that involves checking in with you, you are teaching pup that he can be in the world, and he can do that while being with you. This takes the conflict out of paying attention to his environment (which animals must do) and paying attention to you. Very smart.

cathcatdog Sounds like your dogs are in good, smart, loving hands! Best to all 3 of you and hope to talk with you again!
