sdg1rl @kyetaka how cool! My cousin is a ballet instructor and directs her kids in the Nutcracker every year. But due to Covid, they couldn’t do it last year. Instead, they rehearsed via Zoom & she choreographed the most beautiful ballet! All the girls were wearing masks and it was all outdoors by the beach! She showed it to the family, on a Zoom! It was so beautiful and unique!

llresale I am writing to you from Canada. I am obsessed by Monies but am new to purchasing it. If not marked how can you tell it is authentic? Found a pair on Canada site listed as Monies but not marked. Exact same pair on a USA resale site is marked Monies. Could they still both be authentic? These pieces aren’t cheap so how can I learn?

kyetaka @llresale hello :) this is a very complicated question! Its pretty rough out there, with a lot of fakes, especially certain styles. The lack of signatures on their pieces is maddening! Lol — when I was at the Monies counter in Santa Fe a large portion of the pieces were unmarked. Its like, come on!! Your best bet is to buy from a seller with great ratings who seems to know their stuff, at least when you start collecting. You can learn the styles as you go.

kyetaka @llresale There are a large number of styles I will not carry because the prevalence of knock offs is too great- even by Chico’s and Coldwater Creek, forget the stuff coming out of India! There are indicators as to authenticity that are rarely faked, certain kinds of closures for example- the double C closure is also used by a couple of other artists but for the most part it’s safe. The carved buckle is not. Never buy anything with the silver hook unless it’s very cheap.

kyetaka @llresale watch out for fake carved bone and wood hooks. This style is very popular right now. Monies very rarely painted anything, so on the wood pieces it should be vegetable dyed, not an even coat of paint - there are exceptions, but they are early work and rare… your best bet is just to keep learning all you can and if you ever get the chance to go see them for sale new and retail, do it. Monies has a weight and quality that is hard to describe, but once you experience it you wont forget it.

kyetaka @llresale Have the signature tags had a horrible habit of falling off in early days, so certain styles retain their value even without them, but of course if you can get a signed piece, that’s amazing. Some styles never had a marking at all, so be careful with those- sometimes it comes down to the sizing of the piece. Have I helped at all or muddied the waters? Well, I hope helped, but it’s a BiG brand and so complicated!

kyetaka @llresale oh you’re sweet! This is a good reminder to me to do the next “spot the fake” listing- I’m so behind! But shopping around can be just the most gruesome experience. Eventually I’ll start the blog, I swear, but until then, here we are. I’m still learning, too! There is one other seller on Posh that I’d trust for Monies, but only the one. There are a few who sell on another site that are good. As ever we have to separate the wheat from the chaff.

kyetaka @llresale I personally have never seen a fake monies stamp— but I’m not an expert at all! If you are super grooving on the earrings I say get screenshots and head over to the big social media sites and find the official Monies page and ask. Something that does happen is tag switching, where people will add an old brand tag, but its rare. Most of the falsely advertised Monies are, in my opinion, just ignorance, not an attempt to scam.
