anticulture the smoky scent comes from the professional vat-dye chemicals used in deep-color dyeing, mainly sodium hydrosulfite (the reducing agent) and sodium hydroxide (the alkali/lye), because when these oxidize they can leave a temporary smoky or sulfur-like smell in the fiber even after rinsing; it’s harmless, totally normal for vat dyes, and it disappears completely with one quick wash in cold water with a little detergent or a splash of white vinegar. and its written on my listing

anticulture being falsely accused and being an older woman, with cancer told my handmade vat dyed sweater is full of cigarette smoke is quite upsetting double check yourself before attacking my shop with slander and sending me false accusations when i was kind enough to tell you that its a chemical scent even prior to purchase. How dare you accuse us of tobacco when its overt chemical known to have a sulfur scent - -
