alyce4m @stellalove13 We always called him our little turtle 🐢 because he would roll over on his back when he didn't want to get up and act like he couldn't roll over like a turtle and I found someone on Etsy who makes glass turtles with the ashes so that's something I will do when the time is right

kellyzcloset @alyce4m I know a lot of times white cats with blue eyes are deaf. How can you tell with dogs? Ironically, I have a son that is hearing impaired! He’ll be graduating from nursing school in May. 😁 Are the white boxers often deaf?

alyce4m @fkard50 I think they say around 18% of white boxers are deaf. Colored boxers can also be deaf because it has to do with the white markings. If they happen to have white hair in a certain part of their ears the white hairs die when they are about 6 weeks old and they lose their hearing.

alyce4m @fkard50 The breeder we got our deaf boxer Finn from noticed he didn't hear around 6 weeks because he would sleep through a lot of loud noises so she tried making loud noise and he wouldn't wake up.

kellyzcloset @alyce4m True! It’s funny, Bentley can certainly hear but he’s very sensitive to loud sounds. If anyone raises their voice, he starts trembling. 🙁 You would think he had been abused! I have to constantly tell my son’s no yelling, it’s upsetting Bentley, lol.

kellyzcloset @alyce4m It’s so strange, the littlest thing, such as dropping something will cause him to jump. We adopted him when he was only six weeks old, I often wonder if he had been separated from his mother too early. 🙁

alyce4m @fkard50 That could be possible. We got our first, Gracie from a very nice woman but she was more of a "hobby breeder". She loved her boxers but didn't do much extra as far as exposing them to things. Gracie didn't even know what grass was when we brought her home, she always wanted too pee in the driveway instead of on the grass.

kellyzcloset @alyce4m The woman we got Bentley from was very nice, but overwhelmed. She had two dogs that got pregnant at the same time. One accidentally. So she had 21 puppies penned up in her kitchen. None of them had ever been outside or really exposed to anything. He was the runt and very timid when we adopted him. Several people decided not to take him because he was so shy, their loss, he’s wonderful, so lovable, a big lap dog! LOL

alyce4m @fkard50 He was the best, he could sleep anytime in any position. We unfortunately lost him in November 2016 after a short attempt to fight cancer. He was just two months shy of his fourth birthday and we miss him every day. He would of been 5 tomorrow. ❤️

alyce4m @fkard50 There are tons of puppy mills in PA. Finn came from PA but from a great breeder. Jackson is actually Finn's "half uncle " lol.

We did have some issues with the boys for a while but after being told by vets we were crazy for two years Jackson was finally diagnosed with a low thyroid like we had thought and he is doing much better. Unfortunately low thyroid can cause a type of fear aggression and it's not widely recognized by vets.

alyce4m @fkard50 Sure, she has a website, should come up if you google Howdi Boxers. It hasn't been updated in a while and I'm not positive she is still breeding. She is older and her granddaughter helped her with showing her dogs and I know she was leaving for college around the time we got Finn.

alyce4m @fkard50 Thanks, it sucks. We thought we were prepared, we had insurance and always tried to do what we could to keep them healthy but unfortunately just couldn't get him an appointment with an oncologist in time.

alyce4m @fkard50 Another good breeder in NY is Pheasant Hollow. She has beautiful boxers and does all of the health testing on the parents before breeding. I think her name is Kerry.

alyce4m @stellalove13 It's terrible some of the things these puppy mills get away with. And when they are found to be doing something wrong nothing more than a slap on the wrist happens. I hope more states pass laws only allowing pet stores to get puppies from shelters and rescues. I think that would shut a lot of puppy mills down because than prospective buyers would have to actually go to the puppy mills to purchase the puppy and hopefully be so disgusted with it that they choose to go elsewhere.

alyce4m @rncbee The one pair are Ann Taylor Loft Modern Boot, look more like flares to me though. They re size 34(18) so might be too big and are NWT. The second pair are Gap Resolution Skinny Flare, also size 34, and they have been washed but I don't think I ever wore them.

alyce4m @margitscloset Thanks, I just google the item name and usually get lucky and find some good stock photos to use or if it's something still available to purchase the original website has photos. I use an app called PhotoGrid to make the collages. There is another app called Collageable that I've also used. They are both free to download and use. 😊

Sometimes you just have to try wording your description different ways because if it's an older item the images will of been saved by someone who liked it back then and they may not of titled the item with it's proper name, so you just have to play around with it, sometimes you get lucky and sometimes no matter how many times I try there are some I just can't find.

alyce4m @stellalove13 I know, our local weatherman does a little segment every week with pets available for adoption from local shelters and tonight he had a deaf pitbull and it killed me to know people are passing him up because he's deaf. We actually get our dog food from a store owned by the weatherman's wife so we're going to see if we can donate some cool "Deaf Dog Gear" to him to hopefully help him get adopted.

I really needed it today, I was missing seeing my baby in the window watching the lights from the snow plows. Another advantage to having a deaf dog, the sounds don't scare them & they really enjoy the beauty in things "regular" dogs are scared of. I still remember when he was just a puppy & he noticed fireworks you could see from our back door & he just sat there and watched them.

erjumper @alyce4m no, she lost her hearing about four or five years ago. She is a little over nine years old now so I’m not sure why she lost it so early. My first pug lived till he was almost 14 but he was paralyzed in his back legs and we had a wheelchair for him for his last three years or so but then he was just in too much pain so we made the hard choice of breaking our own hearts so that he was no longer suffering. Our second pug died when she was eight months old of pug encephalitis.

erjumper . It’s a fatal disease and they have no idea what causes it. Her name was Wednesday. So we had a Pugsly and Wednesday and then Wednesday died and we got a new pug puppy that was born the day after Wednesday died so we named her Thursday and that’s our little deaf girl

alyce4m @erjumper I'm so sorry for your losses, I don't think we ever have enough time with them, it's not fair. Especially to lose one when they are so young is just heartbreaking. Our little man was just about two months shy of his fourth birthday when we had to make the hardest decision to let him go and it breaks my heart every day that he is gone. Give your little girl a big kiss for me.

My husband and I are getting divorced so I am keeping our pug, Thursday and our black lab/pitbull mix and I am trying to rescue another lab mix and my husband just bought a bowl dog from a breeder in Ohio. Not a puppy mill but a reputable breeder.

erjumper @alyce4m that’s a great idea! I hadn’t considered it. Unfortunately though most deaf dogs are elderly and although elderly dogs need homes desperately as well I do not handle their deaths well at all. I get extremely depressed and grieve for a long time so I can’t handle rescuing an elderly dog that I would only have for a few years. I know that sounds selfish but I just can’t do that to myself.

Check out Deaf Dogs Rock, they have a website and Facebook page, they often have puppies available for adoption. We actually got Finn as a puppy from a great breeder.

erjumper The great thing was that when we obedience trained Thursday as a puppy we used hand signals as well as verbal commands so she still obeys commands using hand signals only but of course you have to get her to look at you first which is sometimes difficult. To get her inside after partying at night we flash the lights on and off so she knows to come to the door

alyce4m @erjumper It must have been so much easier and comforting for Thursday to not have to learn a different way to communicate when she lost her hearing. I try to use hand signs with my two other boxers sometimes just in case they ever lose their hearing. I was actually surprised when we found out Finn was deaf and started trying to prepare to bring him home and discovered that there was no standard set of hand signals for dogs.

alyce4m @erjumper Getting Finn's attention was hard at first but eventually we we got him to look at us if we stomped on the floor and we did "watch me" training (Deaf Dogs Rock has a good article on it) so he was always good at checking in every so often. We also got him a vibration only collar for when we were outside in our fenced yard since stomping on the ground wasn't going to work there and he did well with that.

alyce4m @erjumper I got a cheap one on Amazon because we weren't sure how he would like it and it didn't last long but was good to kinda test it out. I know I found others that were more expensive that I planned on purchasing, I could try to see if I could find them again but I would recommend trying a cheap one first before you spend a lot on the better ones just in case she doesn't like it.

alyce4m @erjumper The brand I got on Amazon was Dog Widgets, think it was around $20 and came with 2 collars so it was a good deal even though it didn't last very long. You could even use a shock collar that also has a vibration feature but only use the vibration.

Recently they changed it so that when you use the feature anyone who likes the listing for the next 24 hours after will also receive the offer. If you go into your settings you can turn it off if you want to.

alyce4m @croweart They are absolutely the best. My sweetie has always wanted a while boxer so we were so excited when we found one that is related to our brindle boy Jackson. When he was about 6 weeks old we got a phone call letting us know that he was deaf and asking if we would still want him.
