Your profile is so awesome!!!! - I love vintage aviation memorabilia!!! My Dad was a WWII Bombardier Navigator (God bless the memory of all who changed the course of history by destroying evil!!!) <3, and you would have been mesmerized to see it when it was all displayed in cases and frames in our library in the home where I grew up....

catsweater @qrx... Appropriately, I suppose, the collection went to my oldest brother who is a 2 star Army General. All the photos he took, old navigating tools, charts and maps. The most chilling of all was a frame that contained a piece of plasterboard from a spot next to his bed that he had been neatly writing a synopsis of all 40 missions over Germany... Plus a framed photo of Mom with a gash in it....

catsweater @qrx I didn't finish the story!! So... Dad and his mates had a long mission the day before and had barely any sleep when they were called to duty early the following morning. His plane was the first to launch safely into the sky. Plane #2 had just launched to safety when plane #3 somehow spun out of control, exploded, and killed everyone who remained sleeping in the bunker.

catsweater @qrx ...Dad had no idea of this terrible tragedy until he returned to nothing but rubble on the grounds of the base. In shock, he began walking through the piles of debris. He was drawn to one particular pile and listlessly began lifting debris and sadly dropping the pieces to the ground....

catsweater @qrx ...Then he saw a piece of sheet rock and pulled it out of the rubble. It was the wall beside his bunk where he was writing the log and synopsis of each mission. Underneath it was my mothers picture - It was intact, with a small hole. He brought both cherished items home after the war, and both were framed, side by side, on our library wall...

I imagined what it must have been like for Dad, returning to his base which was demolished to nothing but rubble, and how he probably still pondered why he was chosen for this mission that made him one of the very few to survive this tradgedy that took all of his friends instead...

And, while wandering through myriad piles of rubble in shock, that he found my mother's picture and the telling piece of plaster that represented his diary of WWII up until the entry he wrote the prior evening before going to sleep. For all the stories of war that remain forever untold, I somehow felt compelled to share this story with you. ♡☆
