If you're not, and you live near the water, one of the best ways to get involved is to be a deckhand If you live anywhere near where there are large boats, oftentimes captains are looking for deckhands. Some require experience, some do not.

Talk to Marina owners, see if they know anybody looking for some help. Some positions are paid, some are not. For me, every little bit of experience is worth it!
