Hi Sally, I wanted to thank you for all of the shares! I am trying to become an ambassador so it really matters to me. I was starting to share some pieces from your closet when I saw the Thomas Mangelsen’s polar bears. I know Thomas’s brother, Bill and met Thomas one time. While I was in Hong Kong I heard a story about this image. I always meant to verify it but never got the time. The name of the poster is Bad Boys of the Arctic.

The story goes that Thomas and another photographer, a Japanese man, were taken to the same location and they each shot almost an identical shot. When Thomas returned home he printed his shot into the original posters and was selling them in his stores. Someone told him a Japanese photographer also was selling the image he took. A copyright battle ensued.

I don’t know how it ended but several years later Thomas inquired about his Japanese counterpart and was told that he had returned to the site to shoot photographs and was mauled and killed by a polar bear. Thomas felt so awful I believe he decided to give the Japanese man’s wife some sum from the proceeds. It was true there were some Bad Boys of the Arctic, it was them.

As I said, this story was told to me many years ago and this is as true as I can remember it. It’s a very beautiful piece. I have one from the first printing. I have to go upstairs and take a good look at it again. ❤️
