It dates back to when the British Empire sent ships around the Horn of Africa to and from India and its other colonies, long before train or air travel. Since the ocean can be so boring on long voyages, wealthy passengers would purchase staterooms on the ship that faced the land so they'd always have something to see whether they left Britain or returned. They would purchase a room on the Port side(left) on the way Out, and one on the Starboard(right) on the way Home. And so, when they booked a round trip from Britain, the tickets would have "POSH" stamped on them; which stands for "Port Out, Starboard Home."
