She was a cat that had slipped on a fence. All wounded dignity, pretending intention. She had an oval face, not quite symmetrical, just starting to hollow with age: Thin lips and a masculine jaw. Her eyes were her best feature, but they looked fixed like she was engaged in an internal dialogue. She was never really in the room. She arranged herself into a pose - sucked in and overly casual. She shifted to another posture - just as stiff, then shook herself out and pulled herself together in small incremental bits. Obviously, she took some care with herself. Her clothes were plain, dark, neat, and deliberately eccentric. Ten minutes her eyes scoped the room like she was expecting someone. They eventually rested on the door. She broke into a goofy, lopsided grin. Chin first, she pointed herself towards the exit, knocking the contents of her purse on the floor.
