Two fine antique engravings by Thomas Allom, both are handcoloured Victorian prints made from steel engravings excised from Allom’s monumental work on China in the 1840’s. The first being of the Ancient Tombs near Amoy, drawn by Thomas Allom, engraved by W. le Petit. Sketched on the spot by Captain Stoddart, R.N. (Royal Navy). The second is of Lake See-Hoo and Temple of the Thundering Winds, from the Vale of Tombs, drawn by Thomas Allom, engraved by J. C. Bentley. They were sketched in China during the British occupation and Opium Wars. Beautifully framed in simple wooden frames with a forest green mat.
Both prints are in good condition with strong yet subtle colourings and with some repairs, nicks and scuffing on the frames. 'The ancient tombs near Amoy' with mild foxing on the edges of the image.
Their size is identical; Image: 7-7/8 x 6-1/2 inches, Frame: 13-3/4 x 12-3/4 inches

These are quite lovely. I collect Bartlet prints. A lot of history there.
