It's all about the volume in this black wool 1960s Callaghan* opera maxi coat
Was designed to fit loosely over the voluminous evening dresses of the era
Raglan sleeve with lowered pit to fit any sleeve
Rounded front hem
Front slash pockets
Two-button closure
Long sleeves sit below a 3/4 sleeve but above the wrist (~23-24" sleeve depending on your shoulder width)
Large shawl collar can be used as a hood
Center pleat at back
Fully lined in polyester (I'm guessing; this predates care labels)
Made in Italy of beautiful, expensive wool that can be handwashed, hung to dry, and then steamed or pressed
Is a size 40 Italy, which is a US 4, but because of its design can fit much larger. It all depends on how you want to wear it today.
Shoulder width: no more than about 18" before you distort the fall of the coat
Back width (P2P): ~34" (without pulling the pleat apart)
Length from nape: 47.5"
Hem width: 183"
In excellent condition: no tears, stains, or holes. Lining has a few pale marks and one or two scratches that I found.
Callaghan was formed in Italy in 1966 and was designed by prestigious names such as Walter Albini, Gianni Versace, and Romeo Gigli. Many of Gigli's designs can be found in the MET's collection. They went out of business ~1995. Elaborate ball gowns fell out of favour by the mid-60s, so my guess is this coat is from their first collection.
