Vintage / antique combination shoe horn and button hook / lace puller
Folds to a compact size easy to carry in your pocket
Extends to a useable size with the shoehorn at one end and the hook on the other
This piece is stamped with:
A. ROCKEFELLER, POUGHKEEPSIE, NY along the top and bottom, and GOOD SHOES, 426 MAIN ST. in the center
I believe this dates to around 1910-1915, as the shoe company at this address went by a different name as of 1925, according to my research. Additionally the patent for these shoehorns was registered in the mid-1910s, while this piece shows the patent as still pending.
Was A. Rockefeller the name of the cobbler? Was this personalized for Abby ("Babs") Rockefeller, a member of the Rockefeller family, a philanthropist born and raised in NY? Your guess is as good as mine, as nothing I've searched has turned up anything conclusive.
At any rate, this is a beautiful antique piece in remarkable condition given its age.
Measures approximately 6.5 cm long when folded, and 16.5 cm long when extended. The shoe horn is just over 4 cm wide.
In good condition all around with no damage. Minor tarnish holes in the finish, see pics. The folding components are intentionally stiff to avoid slippage while using.
