The Shoe Sizing Dilemma: how accurate are size charts anyway?

This, my friends, is a problem I am far too familiar with, having spent megabucks on shoes online, only to experience the heartbreak of Ugly Stepsister Syndrome.
All over Poshmark, I see people using the phrase, 'According to Poshmark's sizing chart, these should fit a 9.5 since they're marked 39.5', and I cringe, knowing that someone will fall in love, buy the shoes, then experience that same heartbreak.
Well I'm here to tell you, having purchased shoes made in many corners of the globe, that THERE IS NO ONE STANDARD SIZING CHART! And also, even if you're generalizing, a size 39.5 is ALMOST ALWAYS equivalent to a size 8.5 - not 9.5. Shoe sizing is complicated.
If you want your customers to be happy with the big ticket designer shoes they just bought, you need to be aware of a couple of things.
1. Every shoe manufacturer has their own sizing chart, and even within a single country, sizing can vary from one designer to the next.
2. If you're not familiar with a particular designer's sizing, then measurements are the only way to go.
In my experience, high-end designer shoes tend to fit 1/2 to a full size smaller than mass market manufactured shoes, so comparing Manolo Blahnik sizing to Jessica Simpson isn't going to work. Your safest bet is to google each specific designer's sizing chart - yes, they all have them, and they're all different. Or measure the actual footbed length and width if you're not sure.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk. π

here's an interesting article on the history of shoe sizing - did you know that in England, sizes were originally based on the length of a barleycorn?

So true, I have also fallen victim to the Ugly Stepsister Syndrome too many timesβ¦so frustrating. I now ask for measurements of the insoles.
archetypo
@shoptiludrop64 I know right? I'm always shocked at how many sellers, not just on Poshmark either, list things in US sizing that is entirely wrong - no, size 40 doesn't equal size 10! They're just setting themselves up for dissatisfied customers that way.
shoptiludrop64
@archetypo If youβve bought the brand before youβre ok but with all the european sizes itβs a challenge. Lesson learned for me!
archetypo
@shoptiludrop64 Exactly! I'd have to say that the 'official ' Poshmark sizing conversion chart for shoes is accurate less than 10% of the time.

Hi Anna very interesting write up I learn a few things thanks to you I am not even aware of Poshmark shoe size chart as with other stuff like how to take advantage of closet clear out or others they say drop your price by 10% minimum and then they will foot the bill for $0.99 or $6.99 shipping But why donβt I see a $0.99 shipping π€£ or how I know if it was fulfilled so on and so forth thanks for listening to my questions take care Christine

@bzie I know, I find that very confusing myself. Basically, the catch is, if you drop your price 10% & the item DOESN'T sell, you have to keep dropping the price an additional 10% each time they run the promo in order to have the shipping bonus applied. It's insidious, and I guess eventually your stuff does sell - but I'm not a huge fan of being pressured to generate cashflow either. π
christstyle
@archetypo I agree with you 100% it feels like they are nickel and dime you since thatβs what you are left with after posh fee and the price dropπ₯Ί
archetypo
@bzie I think it's OK to just ignore the promotions, don't let them pressure you! The right buyer will come along eventually.

I got into this with another posher who sold me boots without mentioning that they were narrow - maybe he didn't realize, but I think he must have, because he's in the clothing industry. Anyway... I ended up blocking him, because he was rude and a bit aggressive, and, yes, shoe sizing is a complex issue.
archetypo
@cdschreiber64 indeed! I'm always surprised when I see shoe listings described in a way that I know will lead to disappointment. I'm not sure if it's like vanity sizing with clothing or what exactly.
cdschreiber64
@archetypo they were men's shoes. I wear a ladies' 13, so typically a men's 11, but they were quite small and oddly narrow - really my own fault for not asking measurements.

archetypo
@ashleykipping nope, never selling this pair π

Hi Anna, Iβm IN LOVE with all your shoes but my size 11 feet are oh so rarely a 41π
Please, please tag me whenever your online endeavours prove (much) too large for your delicate wee 9.5-ish tootsies. It would be my pleasure to liberate any such gargantuan atrocities from your clutches. π
archetypo
@ilys_apparel Good to know, it's more often than not people with smaller feet who benefit from my addiction, but I definitely do end up with larger pairs occasionally π
