Richard Sumner began carving at the age of 18 in 1974 with little training from other artists. He later apprenticed with the late Kwakwaka’wakw Doug Cranmer in 1978. Richard Sumner knew he wanted to be an artist from an early age growing up in Alert Bay British Columbia on Vancouver Island. He is from the Kwakwaka’wakw decent. He is dedicated to applying his skills to new and unconventional forms. For him it’s about modern designs and ancient forms. He has been a featured artist in countless galleries over the last several decades around the globe and pieces of his art can be found in the Museum of Anthropology and the Royal British Columbia Museum.
