After launching her brand in 1979, Katharine Hamnett quickly grew to fame in the fashion world and British public eye for her political and environmental activism, expressed by the infamous slogan tees. Much of her work incorporated natural fibers such as cotton and silk, not only for their wearability and comfort, but also for their humane and sustainable qualities. Silk, for example, was used as a warm, lightweight alternative to fur. Military references such as boxy silhouettes, muted color palettes, and utilitarian fabrics remain timeless and still influence many in the industry Kanye West being one, who directly cites Hamnett as an inspiration in his work.
