This vintage Cotillion cigarette case.is a bit of a mystery. I can't find any other evidence of the Cotillion company's existence or anything else it ever made. (It doesn't help when I'm searching that "cotillion" is a common noun.)
I also don't know if this piece's brown exterior is made of enamel, bakelite, anther early plastic, or something else entirely. Regardless, it's a sturdy faux tortoiseshell that has held up beautifully. It is slightly worn at one upper corner on the front. Otherwise, I see no wear or damage to it at all.
Finally, I'm not entirely sure how the patented mechanism inside the case is supposed to work. I was unable to find the patent online. Best guess: you'd line up your cigarettes on the side opposite the little plate. The face of the plate would hold your cigarettes in when the case is closed, and the edge of the plate closest to the hinges would hold them in when the case is open.
I have never seen a mechanism like this either IRL or online. This particular cigarette case may be the only one of its type.
Due to all the questions I have about this cigarette case, I don't at all feel confident about dating it. It could have been made anytime from the 1930s to the 1960s.
If the mechanism operates the way I think it does, the case will hold up to a 78 mm cigarette.
The interior of this case is made of brass and is extremely clean. It may never have been used for its intended purpose.
