How circular is Elastane/Spandex/Lycra?

Also known as spandex (and the DuPont 🇨🇦 brand, Lycra) elastane is a plastic material that can stretch up to 6x its normal length. It’s found in a majority of jeans, socks, shirts, swimwear & sportswear. Mixing elastane with other fibres makes recycling difficult - as it is usually less than 3% by weight: recycling such a small amount is no easy task. 60% of trash found in Marine environments is composed of non-biodegradable clothing fibres, likely microfibres from laundry machines. 🐳
